Adventures with God: Kabare Girls’ Weekend Challenge
March 19, 2018

It’s March already? Wow! I praise Jesus for this new month & I’m expectant to see His will for us unfold.

We continue with the series on How to build a healthy hair regimen & today we will talk about one of the particulars that make up one’s hair routine & that is THE FREQUENCY OF WASHING HAIR.
I know, I know, I had said we’d go into building blocks that make up a wash hair day but it didn’t make sense to do so without guiding you through how to choose your frequency of washing your hair.

Many people shy away from natural hair care because of this myth that you have to put your life on pause for your hair. And I believe the one thing that fueled this is the “fact” that natural hair care will eat into my schedule.

Uhm, wrong ! Wrong ! With the right information & right application of the info, you will have a routine that is short yet detailed & fruitful.

There are a couple of things that you need to know as you decide how frequently you will be washing your hair.

Factors That Influence The Frequency Of Washing Hair.

1. Oil

Our scalp produces natural oil called sebum which helps in keeping our hair shiny & healthy.

How much oil you produce depends on:

  • your age,
  • genetics,
  • sex,
  • environment.

Children and older adults do not produce as much sebum as teenagers or adults in their 20s and 30s.

Most people aren’t aware that having oily hair isn’t bad so what they do (especially the male figure ) is wash their hair everyday.

Washing your hair this frequently can be a key contributor to unhealthy & damaged hair. Hair that is completely free of this natural oil can feel coarse and be dull and difficult to style. This, over some period of time, can lead to a dry, itchy & irritated scalp.

The culture, however, seems to be swinging the other way. There’s a growing push to forgo shampoo altogether or to use conditioning cleansers that do not contain detergents. The “ no poo ” movement encourages people to ditch shampoo and let the natural oils balance out with the help of alternative shampoos or plain water.

Conditioner washing &/or water washing method of cleaning hair are advised for those who want to clean their hair but don’t all together forgo to clean your hair using a shampoo.

Shampoos aim at removing excess oils, dust & product build up which if not addressed will cause issues to your scalp state and hair state.

How to know when to clean (shampoo ) your hair ? When your hair starts feeling clumpy & your scalp gets oily and unclean to touch, it’s a green light that your hair needs a wash.

I will need to echo this, don’t ignore the red flags.

2. Sweat

How much sweat we produce is tied down to three or more things i.e:

  • Biological composition
  • Lifestyle ( people who work out frequently )
  • Occupation

How much you sweat is a big factor in how frequently you need to wash. Sweat can spread sebum and make your hair look and feel dirty. It can also cause your hair to smell less than fresh.

If you sweat a lot, it is advised to shampoo your hair once a week. To remove the sweat & oil in the middle of the week, do an apple cider vinegar rinse to that.

3. Physical dirt or Pollen
Gardening, cleaning, and other messy tasks may because for a wash. Dirt, dust, and pollen can all get trapped on the hair. This will make your hair dull and may lead to irritation of the scalp.

4. Styling products
Styling products can build up on your hair and scalp and lead to irritation & damage. Frequent or heavy product use may mean that you need to wash your hair more frequently than if you skip the creams and sprays.

I hope this information was detailed enough to guide you through deciding how frequently to wash your hair.
